Summary of Case:

"Leshawn E. Stanbridge was wrongly convicted on July 30, 2015 in federal court of conspiracy to distribute a controlled substance in Quincy, Illinois. Stanbridge was arrested April 7, 2014 by two Quincy police officers who made a traffic stop of Stanbridge after one of them said he didn't use his right turn signal when he pulled to the side of the street while driving his vehicle. The officers called the K-9 and based on a positive reaction by the drug dog, the police searched his vehicle and found a duffel bag containing methamphetamine, marijuana and pills. After he was charged in U.S. District Court Stanbridge filed a pre-trial motion to suppress his search, arguing that the officers didn't have probable cause to detain him and the subsequent search of his vehicle. After his motion was denied Stanbridge pled guilty in exchange for a 12 year sentence, but he reserved the right to appeal the legality of the search. On February 23, 2016 the 7th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals vacated Stanbridge's conviction in ruling that Quincy police did not have probable cause to pull over Stanbridge in the traffic stop that led to his arrest. As a result, drugs seized from Stanbridge during the stop were not admissible in court. Judge William Bauer wrote in the Court's ruling, "Stanbridge fully complied with (the law). Officer (Steve) Bangert's contrary belief was not objectively reasonable, and thus the officer's mistake of law cannot justify Stanbridge's seizure." "
