Summary of Case:	"Paulren H. Stepter was wrongly convicted in 1987 of first-degree murder in the 1986 shooting death of 25-year-old Beverly Payton in St. Louis, Missouri. Stepter was arrested about three months after the shooting. Paulren Stepter was sentenced to 30 years in prison without parole. On July 31, 1990 the Missouri Supreme Court reversed Stepter's conviction and ordered a new trial because the trial judge erred by failing to give a lesser included offense instruction for second-degree murder. Paul Stepter was acquitted by a jury on July 11, 1991 after his retrial. He was released from custody. Stepter's's 1987 conviction of the first-degree assault of William Jackson in the incident during which Payton was killed. Stepter was charged on Feb. 1, 2017 with first-degree murder in the death of 23-year-old Brandy Morrison, whose body was found in a St. Louis landfill on January 31, 2017."
