Summary of Case:

"Eric Barry Stewart was wrongly convicted in May 2007 of 34 counts of using a document dishonestly to obtain a pecuniary advantage. Stewart's alleged fraud was related to obtaining weekly compensation that had been stopped in August 2005. Eric Stewart was sentenced to 3 years imprisonment. New Zealand's Court of Appeal upheld Stewart's conviction but reduced his sentence to 18 months, which was about the time he had been imprisoned to that point. On May 28, 2009 New Zealand's Supreme Court ruled, "The appellant has established that his trial was unfair and that a substantial miscarriage of justice resulted.
