Summary of Case:

"George Stewart was wrongly convicted in July 2007 of using lewd, indecent and libidinous practices towards several girls 12 to 16 years old between June 2004 and July 2005. Stewart, a pig farmer, was sentenced to three years imprisonment. During his trial the judge instructed the jury to disregard as "of no significance" Stewart's statement to the police that the girls had offered him sexual favours and had suggested they could take photos of themselves in compromising positions if he gave them cigarettes. Stewart also testified that one of the girls threatened to “make up a story that he had abused them” if he didn't give them what they wanted. Stewart appealed. In September 2009 England's Court of Appeals ruled that by instructing the jury to ignore Stewart's statement the judge had prejudicially misdirected the jury, and that gave rise to a miscarriage of justice. Stewart's conviction was quashed."
