Summary of Case: |
"Kia Stewart was wrongly convicted in 2009 of second-degree murder in New Orleans, Louisiana for a killing that occurred in 2005. A post-conviction investigation discovered several alibi witnesses, and a witness who identified another man as the shooter. On April 13, 2015 Stewart's motion for a new trial based on new exculpatory eyewitness evidence was granted, and the judge then granted the Orleans Parish DA's motion to dismiss the charges. Stewart was released that day. In September 2017 Orleans Parish Criminal District Court Judge Arthur Hunter ordered the State of New Orleans to pay Stewart $180,000 in compensation (The payout was $25,000 for each year Stewart was incarcerated after his conviction. He received no compensation for his time jailed awaiting trial.). Stewart could also apply for $80,000 in additional compensation for r loss of life opportunities."" |
