Summary of Case:

"George Stinney Jr. was 14 when he was wrongly convicted of murdering two white girls in Alcolu, South Carolina. Stinney's prosecution was based on his confession that he recanted, and which was obtained without a parent or guardian present. During Stinney's trial his lawyer did not cross-examine prosecution witnesses, and an all-white jury convicted him after deliberating for 10 minutes. Two hours elapsed from the beginning of jury selection to the jury's guilty verdict. Stinney was sentenced to death, and executed three months after the murders. Stinney was the youngest person lawfully executed in the 20th century. On December 17, 2014 Circuit Court Judge Carmen Mullins vacated George Stinney murder conviction on the basis he had been denied due process and received ineffective assistance of counsel during his trial."
