Summary of Case:

"Henry Tameleo was one of four defendants framed by FBI for murdering a man in Boston in 1965 and sentenced to death. Henry Tameleo's sentence was commutted to life in prison when Massachusetts abolished the death penalty in 1974, following the Supreme Court's Furman decision. Three of Tameleo's co-defendants, Limone, Salvati and Greco, were also wrongly convicted. Limone and Greco were also sentenced to death and likewise had their sentences commutted to life. Tameleo died in prison in August 1985 of respiratory failure, and Greco died in 1995. Tameleo was 84 when he died, and he was the oldest man imprisoned in the Massachusetts State prison system. Salvati was released in 1997 after Massachusetts governor comutted his sentence, and Limone was released in 2001 after FBI documents were released proving that J. Edgar Hoover and other FBI officials knew the men were innocent prior to their trial. Limone, Salvati and Tameleo's convictions were vacated in 2001. Tameleo's conviction was vacated in 2002. Tameleo's estate sued the federal government. In July 2007 Tameleo's estate was awarded $13,000,000 of a total award of $101.7 million to the four defendants by federal District Court Judge Nancy Gertner. The federal government appealed the award, and on August 27, 2009 the First Circuit Court of Appeals affirmed the award."
