Summary of Case:

"Chelsea Taylor was wrongly convicted in November 2013 of neglect of a dependent causing death in Indianapolis, Indiana. Taylor was prosecuted on the basis she was culpable for failing to protect her 1-year-old son Jayden Noel who was killed in January 2012 by her boyfriend Ryan Worline, after she left her son with him at the apartment they shared while she went to work. During Taylor's trial there was testimony that Jayden died from a head injury that was the result of blunt-force trauma and that he had injuries to several other areas of his body. At the close of the prosecution's case the trial judge denied the motion by Taylor's lawyer for a directed verdict of not guilty based on insufficient evidence. After her conviction by a jury Taylor was sentenced in January 2013 to 30 years in prison with 20 years suspended, and of the 10 years to be served up to 4 years was to be served in prison and up to 6 years on home detention. Taylor appealed. On March 25, 2015 the Indiana Court of Appeals reversed Taylor's conviction of the basis the trial judge erred in denying Taylor's motion, becuase the prosecution introduced insufficient evidence to prove every essential element of neglect of a dependent causing death beyond a reasonable doubt, and ordered dismissal of the charges. Worline was convicted by the jury in 2013 during his joint trial with Taylor, of murder and neglect of a dependent. He was sentenced to 65 years in prison and five years probation."
