Summary of Case:

"Georgia Thompson was wrongly convicted in June 2006 of fraud under 18 U.S.C. section 666 in federal court in Madison, Wisconsin. U.S. District Court Judge Rudolph Randa denied Thompson's pretrial motion to dismiss her indictment based on her alleged actions did not constitute a crime under Section 666. After her conviction by a jury following a six-day trial, in September 2006 Judge Randa sentenced Thompson to 18 months in prison, and denied her release pending the outcome of her appeal. She began serving her sentence in November 2006. At the conclusion of the oral arguments on April 5, 2007 the three judge panel of the U.S. 7th Circuit Court of Appeals orally ruled that Thompson did not violate Section 666 and her conviction was being reversed, so that she could immediately be released after five months in custody. On April 20, 2007 the U.S. 7th Circuit Court of Appeals issued its written ruling reversed Thompson's conviction and ordering her acquittal on the basis her conduct did not constitute a crime under 18 USC 666."
