Summary of Case:	"Patrick Thompson was wrongly convicted on July 7, 2006 of sexual assault and burglary in Urbana, Illinois. The prosecution's case was based on the victim's in-court identification of him as her alleged assailant. Prior to his sentencing Thompson filed a motion for a new trial that was granted on the basis his trial lawyer provided ineffective assistance of counsel for failing to investigate and discover that the alleged victim had previously made false sexual assault allegations. Thompson had represented himself at his first trial that ended in a hung jury in 2005. Thompson's motion for a new trial was granted. Thompson's third trial began in May 2008 and his new lawyer presented evidence of the victim's unreliable testimony that cast doubt on whether a crime had even occurred. Prior to the jury beginning its deliberations the judge granted Thompson's motion for a directed verdict of acquittal on the home invasion charge. On May 12, 2008 the jury acquitted Thompson of the sexual abuse charge. Thompson filed a lawsuit against his lawyer for his second trial. On August 2008 Thompson was awarded $3,000 -- the amount he had paid his lawyer."
