"Andrew Toth was wrongly convicted of murder based on an eyewitness' identification and sentenced to death. Andrew Toth's conviction was later commuted to life in prison. In 1911 his conviction was overturned based on discovery of the actual murderer, and he was released after 20 years of wrongful imprisonment. When Andrew Carnegie learned of Toth's plight he agreed to pay him a pension of $40 a month for life as an act of kindness."
