Summary of Case:

"Joan Tumuhairwe was wrongly convicted of murdering her husband with the aid of three men in Kakoni village, in the Kiruhura district of Uganda. The prosecution of the four was based on her alleged confession that she claimed she never made. The three men who allegedly assisted her were acquitted at trial. She was sentenced to death. In March 2010 Uganda's Court of Appeal quashed Tumuhairwe's conviction and ordered dismissal of her charge and release from custody. The Court's ruling was based the trial court's erroneous reliance on her disputed confession and the trial court's failure to adequately consider the evidence offered in her defense."
