"Sebahat Tuncel was wrongly convicted on September 18, 2012 of being a member of the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) that is considered to be a terrorist organization. Tuncel was sentenced to 8 years, nine months in prison. Tuncel was detained on November 5, 2006 after an anonymous tip to the police reported that she was meeting with leaders of the PKK. Tuncel was released after 8 months in custody. Following her conviction Tuncel appealed, and her conviction was affirmed by the Supreme Court of Appeals. Tuncel appealed. On March 10, 2015 Turkey's Constitutional Court reversed her convictin and ordered a retrial. Sebahat Tuncel was acquitted on June 25, 2015 after a retrial in Istanbul, Turkey." |
