Summary of Case:

"Kent Anthony Tyler III was wrongly convicted in December 2013 of second-degree murder in the death of 40-year-old Richard Daughenbaugh at the time of a party by the Des Moines River on August 24, 2013. At the time of the incident Tyler was 18. During Tyler's trial witnesses testified he punched Daughenbaugh once after Daughenbaugh drove his pickup into a parking lot where dozens of young people were partying. Daughenbaugh was then attacked by several people, but the prosecution introduced no evidence Tyler joined in the attack. After Tyler's conviction by the jury, he was sentenced to 50 years in prison. Tyler appealed. On April 22, 2015, in a 2-1 majority decision, the Iowa Court of Appeals reversed Tyler's conviction on the basis the prosecution introduced insufficient evidence to prove any of its three theories of Tyler's involvement in the crime beyond a reasonable doubt, and ordered entry of a judgment of acquittal."
