Summary of Case: |
"Hsu Tzu-chiang was wrongly convicted in 2000 of the kidnapping and murder of Huang Chun-shu in Taiwan in September 1995. Chun-shu was a real estate broker, and his kidnappers demanded a ransom of NT$70 million (US$2.2 million). After Tzu-chiang's conviction he was sentenced to death. His two codefendants were convicted as the main perpetrators, and they were also sentenced to death. Tzu-chiang denied any knowledge or participation in the crimes, but his codefendants confessed and said Tzu-chiang participated in the kidnapping. Tzu-chiang repeatedly appealed his convictions. His first six retrial resulted in his conviction and a sentence of death. His seventh and eigth retrials resulted in his conviction and a sentence of life in prison. Tzu-chiang's ninth retrial resulted in his acquittal by the Taiwan High Court on September 1, 2015, on the basis there were major flaws and inconsistencies in the prosecutions evidence and testimony of the prosecution's witnesses. On October 13, 2016 Taiwan's Supreme Court affirmed the High Court's acquittal of Hsu Tzu-chiang in 2014." |
