Summary of Case:

"Deviben Ahir and her paramour Devsinh Vader were wrongly convicted on February 28, 2012 of murder, destruction of evidence and criminal conspiracy in the death of Ahir's husband in Una, India on June 13, 2009. Ahir's husband was Babu Devsinh Bheda. The prosecution of Ahir and Vader was based on Ahir's alleged confession to a village official, and the theory that they gave sleeping pills to Bheda, dragged him to a field, gave him an electric shock, and threw his body into a well. After their conviction Ahir and Vader were sentenced to life in prison. Ahir and Vader appealed. In March 2017 the Gujarat High Court quashed the convictions of Ahir and Vader and ordered their acquittal based on the absence of any reliable evidence they were connected to his death, and the prosecution merely speculated about the circumstances of Bheda's death. The Court also ruled that new medical evidence contradicted the police investigation and the evidence presented at trial regarding the manner of Bheda's death. The Court noted that while sedatives were found in the home of Ahir and Bheda, there was no evidence they were in his system. The High Court also ruled that no motive was established for Ahir and Vader to have killed Bheda, and that a record of phone calls between them did not establish they had any connection with his death."
