Summary of Case:

"Gulzar Ahmad Vani (aka Gulzar Kashmiri) was wrongly convicted of carrying explosives in Delhi, India in 2001. Vani, a native of Kashmir, was a research scholar at the Aligarh Muslim University when he was arrested in July 2001 as an alleged Hizbul Mujahideen operative. The police alleged that Vani confessed to a series of terrorist explosions in a document prepared by the police and signed by Vani, but the courts deemed it was inadmissible as his signature was coerced. After his conviction Vani was sentenced to 10 years in prison. The Delhi High Court overturned Vani's conviction. Vani was charged in 11 terrorism related cases, and as of May 2016 he had either been acquitted or the charges dismissed in ten of those cases based on insufficient evidence he was connected with terrorist acts or had ties to terrorist groups. He has been in custody since his arrest in 2001. On April 18, 2016 Vani was acquitted in a terrorism bombing case in Agra for lack of evidence. The last case against him is being heard in a Barabanki court."
