Summary of Case:	"Kostas Vaxevanis was wrongly convicted in March 2015 of criminal defamation in Athens, Greece. Vaxevanis was the editor of the Greek investigative magazine HotDoc. His prosecution was based on the April 2013 edition of HotDoc, which examined the alleged role of a prominent Greek businessman, Andreas Vgenopoulos, in the 2012 to 2013 Cyprus financial crisis. Vaxevanis' lawyers introduced in his defense, nearly 5,000 documents from Greek and Cypriot authorities to back up the magazine’s claims. After his conviction, Vaxevanis was sentenced to 26 months in prison, suspended for three years. Defamation is punishable under Greece’s Criminal Code with up to two years in prison, although in practice most sentences are converted into a fine. On September 12, 2016 a three-judge panel of the Athens Court of Appeal unanimously vacated the defamation conviction of Kostas Vaxevanis."
