"Sidney Verbal II was an attorney wrongly convicted in 1978 of direct contempt of court for being 18 minutes late during the trial of a client in Mecklenburg County, North Carolina. After a summary proceeding during which the trial judge found Verbal guilty, he was sentenced to two days in jail. Verbal appealed. On May 15, 1979 the North Carolina Court of Appeals reversed Verbal's conviction on the basis the trial judge failed to provide notice of the charges, an opportunity to respond, to make a finding of facts supporting Verbal's conviction, or state that the evidence established his guilt beond a reasonable doubt." |
