Summary of Case: |
"Marius Visser was co-defendant of Marius van Rensburg. Both men were wrongly convicted in 2006 of assault for allegedly setting a police dog on a man in 1999. Both men were sentenced to two years in prison, and released on bail pending the outcome of their appeal. In July 2008 the Cape Town High Court overturned the convictions on the basis that the witness statements taken over the seven years that elapsed from the time of the alleged incident and the men's trial made them too unreliable to establish the men's guilt beyond a reasonable doubt." |
