Summary of Case:

"Lee Wan-koo, South Korea's former prime minister, was wrongly convicted in 2015 of receiving 30 million won (US$27,000) in bribes from the chairman of a construction company that was involved in a lobbying scandal in April 2013. After Wan-koo was convicted he was sentenced to 8 months in prison suspended for two years of lawful behavior. On September 27, 2016 the Seoul High Court overturned Wan-koo's conviction and ordered his acquittal for two reasons: the statute of limitations had expired; and, prosecution failed to introduce sufficient evidence to prove his guilt beyond a reasonable doubt, because the key evidence was from a witness who harbored anger towards the Wan-koo and he committed suicide on April 9, 2016 hours before a hearing to determine the legality of his arrest regarding embezzlement charges."
