Summary of Case:

"Geng Wanxi was wrongly convicted of fraud in 1986 in China. Wanxi's prosecution was based on a financial dispute related to a canned oranges business. Wanxi claimed he was innocent and his case was wrongfully handed amid China's aggressive national campain in 1986 to crack down on crime. Wanxi's conviction was overturned on appeal in June 2018. Wanxi filed a claim for compensation with the Intermediate Court of Yancheng in Jiangsu, seeking 1.6 million yuan (US$231,805) compensation. The Court rejected his claim, ruling that he was convicted prior to the enactment of China's State Compensation Law in 1995, and the law is not retroactive. On May 15, 2019 Wanxi appealed the denial of his claim to the High Court in Jiangu province."
