Summary of Case:

"Barri White and Keith Hyatt were co-defendants. White was convicted in 2002 of murdering 19-year-old Rachel Manning on December 10, 2000 by beating and strangling her, and Hyatt was convicted of perverting the course of justice for allegedly battering the victim's face after she was dead. Barri White, 19, was Rachel's boyfriend, and the prosecution claimed he murdered her after leaving a party in the early morning hours, and that Hyatt, 47, used his van to move the body to where it was found. White was sentenced to life in prison and Hyatt to 5 years in prison. The Court of Appeals overturned both convictions on November 15, 2007, acquitting Hyatt because of insufficient evidence, and ordering White's retrial. White was released on bail pending his retrial. After a two week retrial and two days of deliberation, a jury acquitted White on December 18, 2008. White was wrongly imprisoned for five years and Hyatt served 2-1-2 years in prison before he was released on parole. On December 6, 2011, 40-year-old Shahidul Ahmed was charged with Manning's murder after DNA evidence linked him to the crime following his arrest for an unrelated matter. Ahmed was convicted in September 2013 of Manning's murder and sentenced to 17 years to life in prison. Ahmed's DNA was collected after his arrest when a "good Samaritan" reported that Ahmed had attempted to attack a young woman and he had followed the man after the man made sure the woman got home safe."
