"Jack White was wrongly convicted in 1995 of sexual assaulting a woman in or about 1989 at the Huronia Regional Centre in Orilla, Ontario, Canada. White was charged in 1993 based on allegations by a co-worker that in about 1989 he witnessed White fondling a disabled woman’s breasts in a shower. White's conviction was based on the testimony of the co-worker. In June 2010, the Ontario Court of Appeals quashed White's conviction and ordered a retrial based on ineffective assistance of counsel: White's lawyer had failed to use available evidence to challenge the credibility of the co-worker's testimony because she had a motive to lie. On November 26, 2010, the Crown's prosecutors withdrew the charges (the U.S. equivalent is dismissal of the indictment). White was assisted by James Lockyer, a lawyer who works with the Association in Defence of the Wrongly Convicted." |
