Summary of Case: |
"Samuel Tito Williams was wrongly convicted on January 22, 1948 of murder based solely on his false confession that the police had coerced from him. After his conviction by a jury Samuel Williams was sentenced to death. In 1949 New York Governor Thomas Dewey commutted Samuel Williams death sentence to life in prison. In 1963 his conviction was overturned by a federal court on the grounds the confession had been coerced, and he was released after almost 16 years of wrongful imprisonment. He was later awarded $40,000 in compensation from the City of New York for "malicious prosecution."" |
