Summary of Case:

"Victor Williams was wrongly convicted on October 3, 2012 of illegal possession of a firearm, second-degree sexual intercourse with a person who was under the influence of an intoxicant, and intimidation of a witness in Jackson County, Wisconsin. Williams prosecution was based on the testimony of the the alleged victim, Sheleah Grata, and her mother, Jennifer Grata, about the incident that they alleged happened on November 4, 2011.. After his conviction following a bench trial Williams was sentenced to 12 years in prison. The police received a letter in January 2014 in which a woman claimed that Jennifer and Sheleah admitted that they lied that Williams committed rape and possessed a gun. The case was reopened, and when interviewed by the police Jennifer Grata admitted she lied about the rape and gun because she was angry with Williams because he was having sex with her daughter as well as her. Williams filed a motion for a new trial based on the new evidence that the Jackson County DA's Office did not oppose. William's motion was granted, and the DA's motion to dismiss his sexual intercourse and witness intimidation charges was granted on May 9, 2014. The DA's motion to dismiss the gun possession charge was granted on June 23, 2014. Williams filed a federal civil rights lawsuit in August 2016 that named as defendants the Jackson County Sheriff's Dept., Sheriff's Deputy Rosandich, and Sheriff's Captain Timothy Nichols."
