Summary of Case: |
"Shelia Wilson was wrongly convicted on March 13, 1979 of first-degree murder in the shooting death of her husband in Christian County, Kentucky on February 3, 1978. After her conviction by a jury Wilson was sentenced to 20 years in prison. Wilson's conviction was affirmed on direct appeal and her post-conviction petition was denied by Kentucky state courts. The shooter gave a sworn deposition that Wilson was "in no fashion or form" involved in her husband's murder. Wilson filed a federal habeas petition that was granted in 1983, with the federal judge ordering a new trial because the evidence of her "intent to murder her husband was insufficient to support a jury conviction of first-degree murder. The prosecution declined to retry Wilson and the charges were dismissed." |
