Summary of Case:	"Markus Wolf was wrongly convicted of treason in July 1993 after a two month trial for being the head of East Germany's foreign intelligence network prior to unification of East and West Germany on October 3, 1990. Markus Wolf was sentenced to six years in prison. Wolf headed the East German Ministry for State Security's foreign intelligence service from 1953 until his retirement in 1986 -- three years before unification occurred. Wolf's conviction was overturned on October 18, 1995 by the West German Court of Appeals, based on a ruling by the West German Supreme Court on May 23, 1995 that East German spies couldn't be tried for treason against West Germany prior to unification because the German Democratic Republic (East Germany) was a seperate country. Wolf died on November 9, 2006, at age 83."
