Summary of Case: |
"Wong Hsiao Wong was wrongly convicted in 1920 of smuggling opium into the Philippines from China. Wong was a Lieutenant-Commander in the Chinese Navy. He had travelled to the Philippines to study aviation. The opium was found in his baggage. He was sentenced to two years imprisonment and fined $2,000. It was discovered after his conviction that smugglers had placed the opium in his baggage. On February 20, 1921 the Philippine Supreme Court overturned Wong's conviction based on the new evidence of his innocence and he was released from prison. The Supreme Court stated in their ruling tht Wong was the innocent victim of an "ingenuous plot concocted by experienced smugglers who placed opium in his baggage."" |
