Summary of Case:	"Umeda Yoshimitsu was convicted on December 22, 1957 of a robber and murder committed on October 10, 1950 in Hokkaido. Yoshimitsu was arrested in 1952, and when interrogated by police he confessed. Yoshimitsu recanted his confession as coerced. Yoshimitsu's prosecution was based on his confession. After his conviction Yoshimitsu was sentenced to life in prison. His first request for a new trial was submited in October 1962 and denied in 1968. He filed his second request in December 1979 with the Kushiro District Court. Three years later, in 1982 the court reopened Yoshimitsu's case. The prosecution's appeal was denied by the Sapporo High Court in February 1985. Yoshimitsu's retrial began on February 8, 1985, and he was found not guilty on September 8, 1987."
