Summary of Case:

"Alfonso Martin del Campo Dodd was wrongly convicted in 1992 of the double murder of the couple he was living with in Mexico City. There was no evidence implicating Del Campo Dodd -- a dual citizen of Mexico and the United States -- in the crime except for his confession that he recanted as coerced by police torture. After del Campo Dodd's conviction he was sentenced to 50 years in prison. Years after his convictiona police officer admitted that he and other police officers had tortured him. But the authorities ignored that and other evidence of his torture, including medical reports. When del Campo Dodd discovered that non-disclosed evidence, he filed a petition to overturn his conviction. On September 4, 2014 Amnesty International released its report: "Mexico: Shocking rise in reports of torture and ill-treatment as authorities turn a blind eye." On March 18, 2015 Mexico's Supreme Court vacated del Campo Dodd's conviction on the basis that there was no incriminating evidence linking him to the double murder other than his confession that was inadmissible because it was extracted by torture. The Court ordered del Campo Dodd's immediate release after 23 years in custody."
